Orthokeratology

Want to free yourself from glasses? Make sure you speak to one of the Spectacle Hub Optometrists about Orthokeratology!

This specialised process involves wearing a custom designed contact lens whilst asleep, to gently reshape the front surface of the eye.

This restores clear vision during waking hours and eliminates the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses during the day. An added benefit of Orthokeratology is that it has been shown to reduce the progression of myopia or short-sightedness and a non-invasive alternative to laser corrective surgery.

Orthokeratology Contact Lenses

Orthokeratology contact lenses or corneal reshaping lenses, as they are also known, have been used by ophthalmologists and optometrists for many years to correct eye defects. Orthokeratology involves using specially designed rigid contact lenses to correct common refractive errors such as myopia. Orthokeratology contact lenses work using the same principle as conventional contact lenses, where they are placed on the eye’s surface.

However, they gently reshape the cornea to correct vision. Also, Ortho-K lenses are only worn at night time, unlike traditional contact lenses.

It is a safe and effective procedure that can be used to treat a wide range of vision defects. It is popular amongst patients who have tried other forms of vision correction such as spectacles or laser surgery but who have not been satisfied with the results.

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, is a proven treatment that has been around for decades. It is the safest and most effective way to improve your vision without wearing glasses or contact lenses. Orthokeratology Melbourne uses a specific type of contact lens to gently change your cornea’s shape. By doing this, we can improve your vision.

What are Ortho-K Lenses?

Ortho-K lenses are very much like standard contact lenses. However, they are worn only overnight and overtime they reshape the eye to ensure that in future, your eyes should be working as best as possible again with no need for glasses or contact lenses.

How Does Ortho-K Lens Work?

The ortho-k treatment process involves wearing a special set of rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses every night for roughly six weeks. These lenses gently reshape the cornea into its proper shape over time when worn with orthokeratology sleeping eye goggles. This allows light from distant objects to be focused properly on the retina instead of being formed into blurred images. Ortho-k’s are worn during sleep only and removed upon waking up. This process takes time to complete and will vary from person to person depending on individual anatomy and visual needs. If you are interested in learning more about how Ortho-K works and whether it may be right for you, please contact one of our offices near you today.

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR ORTHO-K?

People with mild to moderate myopia (with or without astigmatism) are the most ideal candidates for orthokeratology. This revolutionary treatment is suitable for children right up to adults.

If you wear contacts/glasses, work in a dusty environment, participate in sport or require myopia control this may be the solution for you!

HOW LONG DOES ORTHO-K TAKE?

Most patients will experience a rapid improvement in their vision over the first three days.

Vision may continue to improve and the full effect should be reached after less than a month. To enjoy the full benefits of ortho-k these lenses are required to be worn every night.
