Glaucoma

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause progressive damage to the optic nerve, often due to increased pressure inside the eye. Known as the “silent thief of sight,” glaucoma disease typically develops slowly and without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.

Because of its gradual nature, regular eye exams are crucial for early detection and ongoing glaucoma management.

Glaucoma Symptoms: What to Watch For

In the early stages, glaucoma may not present any obvious symptoms. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience:

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pain or redness (in acute cases)
  • Halos around lights
  • Sudden vision loss (rare but serious)

If you notice any of these signs, or have a family history of glaucoma, it is important to book an eye examination with an optometrist as soon as possible.

How is Glaucoma Diagnosed?

  • At Spectacle Hub, we use advanced diagnostic technology to detect signs of glaucoma early. During your visit, your optometrist will perform a comprehensive assessment that may include:
  • Tonometry (measuring eye pressure)
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging
  • Visual field testing
  • Examination of the optic nerve

These tests are non-invasive and completely painless. Our goal is to catch glaucoma before vision loss begins, and to create a tailored treatment plan for long-term care.

Glaucoma Treatment Options

While glaucoma cannot be cured, early diagnosis and consistent glaucoma treatment can slow or prevent further vision loss. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of the condition:

Prescription Eye Drops

Eye drops are often the first line of treatment. They work by either reducing the production of fluid in the eye or improving drainage to lower intraocular pressure.

Oral Medications

In some more serious cases, tablets may be prescribed in combination with eye drops for better control of eye pressure.

Laser Therapy

Laser treatments, such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), are often used to improve fluid drainage and manage intraocular pressure.

Surgical Options

For more advanced cases, surgery may be necessary to create a new drainage path for eye fluid. These procedures are usually performed by a specialist ophthalmologist.

If required, we will refer you to a trusted glaucoma ophthalmologist in Melbourne or Geelong for ongoing care. You can learn more about treatment options through the Glaucoma Australia website.

Ongoing Glaucoma Management

Managing glaucoma is a lifelong process. At Spectacle Hub, we support you with regular check-ups, monitoring of intraocular pressure, and updated treatment plans based on your individual condition.

We keep communication clear and open, ensuring you understand your treatment and how to manage your condition effectively at home.

Looking to book an eye examination?

We recommend that everyone should have an eye test with an optometrist at least once every 2 years.

Who is at Risk of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma can affect anyone, but some people have a higher risk. These include:
  • Individuals over the age of 40
  • People with a family history of glaucoma
  • Those with diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Long-term steroid users
  • Individuals of African or Asian descent

If you fall into any of these categories, regular eye checks are essential to catch signs of glaucoma early
